Travel Carbon Emission Footprint Calculator

Estimate the greenhouse-gas footprint of a trip from air, car, rail, bus, lodging, and an optional pre-calculated category. Each travel activity uses a user-entered emissions factor, allowing the same calculator to work with factors from different countries, operators, vehicle classes, cabin classes, and accounting methods.

The page is useful for comparing itineraries, travel policies, event logistics, and personal trips. By showing transport and lodging contributions separately, it helps identify which part of the trip drives the largest share of the modeled emissions rather than reducing the trip to a single opaque number.

1. Map the trip by mode
Enter passenger-kilometers for air, rail, and bus, plus vehicle-kilometers for car travel.

2. Enter mode-specific factors
Use emissions factors that match the trip conditions and units shown.

3. Set car occupancy
Car emissions are divided among the entered occupants to estimate the modeled share per traveler.

4. Add lodging
Enter the number of hotel nights and a kgCO₂e-per-night factor if lodging is within your boundary.

5. Review the trip total
The main result is the modeled footprint for one traveler under the entered distances, factors, occupancy, and lodging assumptions.

Trip footprint = Air + Car share + Rail + Bus + Lodging + Other

Air = Passenger-km × Air EF ÷ 1,000

Car share = Vehicle-km × Car EF ÷ Occupants ÷ 1,000

Rail/Bus = Passenger-km × Mode EF ÷ 1,000

Lodging = Nights × Hotel EF ÷ 1,000

Where:
Transport factors = kgCO₂e per passenger-km or vehicle-km as labeled.
Hotel factor = kgCO₂e per room-night or traveler-night according to the factor source.
Other = pre-calculated tCO₂e allocated to this traveler.

Assumptions: Aviation methods may differ on whether they include non-CO₂ climate effects. Use a factor set consistent with your intended reporting method.

What the result means

The result estimates the emissions allocated to one traveler for the trip activities entered.

For group travel, make sure passenger-kilometers, room allocation, and shared-car assumptions are applied consistently to avoid double counting.

Calculation:
Air = 2,400 × 0.16 ÷ 1,000 = 0.384 tCO₂e
Car share = 300 × 0.20 ÷ 3 ÷ 1,000 = 0.020 tCO₂e
Rail = 250 × 0.035 ÷ 1,000 = 0.00875 tCO₂e
Bus = 80 × 0.07 ÷ 1,000 = 0.0056 tCO₂e
Hotel = 3 × 14 ÷ 1,000 = 0.042 tCO₂e
Total = 0.384 + 0.020 + 0.00875 + 0.0056 + 0.042 + 0.020 = 0.48035 tCO₂e

Result:
0.480 tCO₂e per traveler

Interpretation: Air travel accounts for most of the modeled footprint in this example, so itinerary or aviation assumptions have the largest effect on the total.

What is passenger-kilometer?

One passenger-kilometer means transporting one passenger for one kilometer. A 500 km flight for one traveler is 500 passenger-km; for two travelers it is 1,000 passenger-km if you are calculating the group total.

Why does car occupancy matter?

The vehicle emits for the whole trip regardless of how many people are inside, so dividing by occupants allocates that vehicle footprint across travelers in this model.

Should flight factors include radiative forcing or other non-CO₂ effects?

That depends on your methodology. Aviation factor sets differ, so choose a factor consistent with your reporting purpose and document the assumption.

Can I use miles?

The distance fields are in kilometers. Convert miles to kilometers before entering them unless you first convert the emissions factor to match miles.

Does this include food or activities at the destination?

Only if you add a pre-calculated amount in Other travel emissions. The dedicated fields cover transport and lodging only.
