Target travel footprint = Baseline footprint × (1 − Target reduction % / 100)

Required reduction = Baseline footprint − Target footprint

Target average per trip = Target footprint ÷ Number of trips

Where:
Baseline footprint = total travel emissions in tCO₂e for the selected period.
Target reduction % = desired decrease from baseline.
Trips = number of trips represented by the baseline.

Assumptions: The per-trip comparison holds trip count constant. If the strategy includes reducing the number of trips, the total target remains valid but the average-per-trip interpretation should be adjusted.

What the result means

The main result is the maximum total travel footprint consistent with the selected reduction target.

A target does not prescribe how to achieve the reduction; itinerary, mode, distance, and travel frequency can all contribute.

Given:
Baseline travel footprint = 18 tCO₂e
Target reduction = 35%
Trips = 30

Calculation:
Target footprint = 18 × (1 − 0.35) = 11.7 tCO₂e
Required reduction = 18 − 11.7 = 6.3 tCO₂e
Baseline average = 18 ÷ 30 = 0.60 tCO₂e/trip
Target average = 11.7 ÷ 30 = 0.39 tCO₂e/trip

Result:
11.7 tCO₂e

Interpretation: If the number of trips stays at 30, the average footprint would need to fall from 0.60 to 0.39 tCO₂e per trip to meet the 35% total reduction target.

Does the target require fewer trips?

Not necessarily. You could reach the total target through fewer trips, lower-emission modes, shorter distances, different cabin choices, cleaner vehicles, or a combination.

What period should the baseline cover?

Use a period that matches how you plan to track the target, such as a calendar year or a defined event program. Keep the same boundary when measuring future performance.

Why is trip count required?

It is used only to show average emissions per trip. The total target footprint is determined by the baseline and reduction percentage.

Can I use the tool for one trip?

Yes. Enter one trip, and the per-trip figures will equal the total baseline and target footprints.

Should offsets count toward the reduction percentage?
